One of the most recognizable names in the gaming industry is getting an even more familiar identity.
Polish gaming giant CD Projekt has officially decided to rename itself CD Projekt Red, aligning the entire company with the globally recognized brand behind blockbuster franchises such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.
The decision was approved during the company’s General Meeting held on June 23, marking a symbolic new chapter for one of Europe’s most successful game developers.
From Distributor to Global RPG Powerhouse
CD Projekt’s history stretches back to 1994, when the company began as a distributor of foreign video games in Poland.
In 2002, the company established CD Projekt Red, a development studio created to adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher novels into a video game series.
More than two decades later, that studio has evolved into the company’s primary business and global identity.
According to company management, the name change reflects the reality of what CD Projekt has become.
"The studio's activities currently correspond to the Company's core operational activity," management explained ahead of the vote.
Today, CD Projekt Red is synonymous with some of the industry’s biggest RPG franchises, making the rebranding a logical step from both a business and marketing perspective.
A Unified Global Brand
Management stated that adopting the CD Projekt Red name across the entire organization will strengthen brand consistency worldwide.
The company believes the new identity will make it easier for players, investors, and partners to associate the corporate entity directly with its games and franchises.
In recent years, the red bird logo and the CD Projekt Red name have become far more recognizable globally than the original corporate branding.
For many players, the distinction between CD Projekt and CD Projekt Red had already largely disappeared.
GOG Is No Longer Part of the Group
The rebranding also follows significant structural changes within the company.
At the end of 2025, CD Projekt sold digital storefront GOG to company co-founder Michał Kiciński in a deal valued at $25 million.
Following the sale, GOG managing director Maciej Gołębiewski explained that the separation was a natural evolution.
"We have different strategies. GOG has a different strategy, CD Projekt has its own strategy."
With GOG no longer under its umbrella, the company is now almost entirely focused on game development and publishing.
The Future of CD Projekt Red
The newly renamed company currently has multiple major projects in development.
These include:
- The Witcher 4, currently in full development.
- A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, being developed by the company’s Boston studio.
- Project Sirius, a multiplayer game set in The Witcher universe.
- Project Hadar, CD Projekt Red’s first completely original intellectual property.
As the studio enters its next era, the rebranding signals a clear message: CD Projekt Red is doubling down on what made it one of gaming’s most influential developers in the first place—creating ambitious RPG experiences for a global audience.
