Before BioWare Became a Legend
Before Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, BioWare was a small Canadian development studio with an unusual origin story. Its founders were not career game developers but three medical doctors whose shared interests in technology and video games eventually led them away from medicine and into game development.
Founded in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1995, BioWare first entered the market with Shattered Steel, a science-fiction mech combat game. Its next major project, Baldur’s Gate, would prove far more influential. Released in 1998, the role-playing game established BioWare as a significant name in PC gaming and laid the groundwork for a career built around expansive worlds, party-based adventures and character-driven storytelling.
The studio’s early history is not simply a story of an unexpected career change. It is also the story of a young developer learning how to turn technical ambition into commercially successful games.
