Sony to Skip CES 2027 for First Time in Event’s History

Sony will not attend CES 2027, marking the first time the company has skipped the Consumer Electronics Show since the event began in 1967.

Neither Sony nor its affiliates are expected to exhibit at next year’s show, ending a presence that has made CES an important stage for the company to present new technologies, products and, on several occasions, PlayStation-related announcements.

The decision comes as Sony shifts its public focus toward entertainment, intellectual property and technology designed to support creators.

Sony CES 2027 absence and PlayStation event strategy

Sony Steps Away From a Decades-Long CES Tradition

A Sony spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company’s decision to skip CES 2027 reflects its current priorities around “entertainment, intellectual property, and technology geared to support creators.”

The company also emphasized that it regularly reassesses its approach to events and communications based on the needs of its different businesses.

The decision is notable because Sony has maintained a presence at CES since the exhibition launched in 1967. Although its involvement has evolved over the decades, the event has frequently provided Sony with a high-profile platform for showcasing new consumer technologies.

Sony did not operate a traditional booth at CES 2026 either, but the company was still represented through its joint venture with Honda, which used the event to showcase the Afeela electric vehicle.

For CES 2027, however, Sony and its affiliates are expected to be completely absent from the exhibition floor.

PlayStation Has Used CES for Major Announcements

Sony’s CES appearances have also occasionally become important moments for PlayStation.

At CES 2020, former PlayStation president and CEO Jim Ryan revealed the final PlayStation 5 logo during Sony’s presentation. The appearance gave the upcoming console additional exposure months before its November launch.

Sony also used CES 2022 to formally announce PlayStation VR2 alongside Horizon: Call of the Mountain, providing one of the clearest demonstrations of how the company could use a consumer technology event to connect its hardware strategy with its gaming business.

That role has diminished in recent years as Sony increasingly uses its own digital presentations to communicate PlayStation announcements.

State of Play broadcasts have become a central part of PlayStation’s communication strategy, allowing Sony to control the timing and format of announcements without relying on major industry exhibitions.

Sony’s Event Strategy Is Changing

The CES decision follows a broader reduction in Sony’s physical presence at major gaming events.

Sony has not attended Gamescom since 2019 and was again absent from the in-person event in 2026. Instead, PlayStation has continued to rely heavily on digital showcases and direct online communication.

The contrast was particularly visible at this year’s Gamescom. Nintendo and Xbox both maintained significant presences at the event, while Sony remained absent.

Nintendo operated two booths, including a stage and a playable-games area, giving visitors direct access to its software and hardware lineup.

Gamescom organizers also said the exhibition area was fully booked, citing exhibition demand that was higher than ever.

Sony’s continued absence therefore does not appear to reflect a lack of interest in major gaming events from the wider industry. Instead, it points toward a different approach to how the company chooses to communicate with its audience.

From Hardware Showcases to Entertainment and IP

Sony’s explanation for skipping CES 2027 is particularly relevant to the company’s broader transformation.

The company is no longer positioned solely around consumer electronics. Its businesses now span PlayStation, film, television, music, entertainment intellectual property, image sensors and technologies aimed at creators.

That makes CES less directly aligned with some of Sony’s current priorities than it was when hardware demonstrations were at the center of the company’s public identity.

The decision does not mean Sony is abandoning technology. The company specifically referenced technology supporting creators as one of its current areas of focus.

Instead, Sony’s statement suggests that the company is reassessing where and how it presents that technology, while placing greater emphasis on the relationship between technology, entertainment and intellectual property.

For PlayStation, that increasingly means communicating directly with players through dedicated digital events rather than depending on traditional trade-show stages.

CES 2027 Will Mark a Significant Change for Sony

Sony’s absence from CES 2027 will close a chapter that began with the first edition of the event in 1967.

The company has used CES over the years to present consumer technologies, demonstrate future products and generate attention around major PlayStation developments. Its decision to step away now reflects a broader change in Sony’s priorities and event strategy.

The company has not indicated that it is abandoning physical industry events altogether. Instead, its recent approach shows a preference for selectively choosing where its businesses need a physical presence and where digital communication can serve the same purpose.

For PlayStation fans, the practical consequence is straightforward: CES is becoming less likely to serve as a major source of PlayStation announcements, while State of Play and other Sony-controlled showcases remain important communication channels.

Sony’s first CES absence therefore represents more than a missing booth. It is another visible sign of how the company is redefining the role of technology within a business increasingly built around entertainment, intellectual property and creators.
