Sony has confirmed a major change in its game distribution strategy, with PlayStation digital-only games set to become the standard for new releases starting in January 2028.

The company will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from that date, marking a major shift toward digital distribution. The decision reflects changing purchasing habits while raising new questions about physical ownership, game preservation, and long-term access.

They will be available through the PlayStation Store and other approved digital retailers.

Physical discs released before this date will not be affected. Existing boxed games and older titles will remain playable and available.

Sony Interactive Entertainment says this shift reflects changing player habits. Digital purchases have now become the main way people buy full games on PlayStation platforms.

Why Sony Is Moving Toward PlayStation Digital-Only Games

Sony says the move matches wider trends across the entertainment industry. Digital consumption continues to replace physical media.

The company also notes that nearly 80% of full game sales on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 are now digital.

Sony adds that this transition will help it better align with player preferences while still supporting both retail and digital channels during the shift period.

Digital Licensing Raises Access and Ownership Concerns

Sony also reminded players that digital purchases are licenses, not ownership of a physical product.

This reflects a growing reality in the industry. Players are buying access to games, not permanent copies.

This raises ongoing questions around preservation and long-term access to games.

The company says it remains committed to supporting older content across future PlayStation platforms.

Industry-Wide Shift Accelerates

The decision fits into a wider industry trend toward digital distribution.

Digital-only consoles already exist on PlayStation and Xbox platforms. Other publishers are also experimenting with new formats.

Some recent examples include download-only releases and hybrid physical editions like Game-Key Cards, which offer physical packaging without full game data on disc.

Market Trends Still Show a Mixed Transition

Physical games are still present in the market, even if they are declining long-term.

Recent data showed a small increase in US boxed game sales, partly driven by new hardware cycles like the Nintendo Switch 2.

However, analysts see this as a temporary rise inside a long-term downward trend.

Most expect physical formats to continue shrinking as the industry moves further toward digital-first distribution.

The End of the PlayStation Disc Era

Sony’s move toward PlayStation digital-only games represents one of the clearest signs yet that the traditional physical release model is entering its final phase.

Physical games will continue to exist for older releases, and the transition will not happen overnight. However, from January 2028, new PlayStation titles will move entirely toward digital distribution.

For players, the change offers greater convenience but also brings renewed questions about ownership, preservation, and what happens when access to a digital game eventually depends on a platform or service.
