A New Chapter Begins for the South of Midnight Developer

Compulsion Games, the studio behind South of Midnight, has announced that it is seeking new partnerships following its transition away from Xbox ownership.

After becoming an independent developer alongside Double Fine Productions as part of Xbox’s recent restructuring, the studio says it is expanding its opportunities to collaborate with companies across the games and entertainment industries.

The move marks a new phase for Compulsion Games, which aims to continue creating original experiences while leveraging its creative and technical expertise for future projects.

From Xbox Studio to Independent Developer

Compulsion Games was acquired by Xbox in 2018 alongside Ninja Theory, becoming part of Microsoft’s expanding first-party studio portfolio.

However, following major restructuring efforts at Xbox, the company announced changes affecting several internal teams and studios. Compulsion Games and Double Fine were separated from Xbox and are now operating independently.

While other studios affected by the restructuring, including Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, are exploring potential new ownership or funding opportunities, Compulsion Games has secured its return to independence.

The studio will also retain ownership of its original intellectual properties, including:

  • Contrast
  • We Happy Few
  • South of Midnight

A Studio Looking for New Collaborations

In an open letter, Compulsion Games explained that independence will allow the studio to explore new partnerships across the industry.

The developer highlighted its experience creating original intellectual properties and invited potential partners to work with the team behind South of Midnight, which received recognition including a BAFTA Award, a Peabody Award, and multiple Canadian Game Awards.

According to the studio, future collaborations could benefit from its experience in:

  • Original world-building
  • Narrative-driven experiences
  • Artistic direction
  • Technical development
  • Creative collaboration

Building on South of Midnight’s Success

Released in 2025, South of Midnight represented a major creative milestone for Compulsion Games.

The action-adventure title combined a distinctive visual style with a narrative inspired by Southern folklore, reinforcing the studio’s reputation for creating unique worlds rather than following established genre formulas.

By keeping the rights to its recent projects, Compulsion Games retains control over the franchises it has developed while exploring new opportunities for growth.

A Return to the Studio’s Independent Identity

Compulsion Games described the transition as a return to its roots as an independent developer.

The studio expressed gratitude toward Xbox for its support during its time under Microsoft while emphasizing that its future will continue to focus on creating original games with strong artistic identities.

The team’s immediate priority remains supporting employees during the transition while preparing for its next projects.

The Future of Compulsion Games

Compulsion Games’ independence represents a different outcome from many studio transitions seen across the industry.

By retaining its intellectual properties and actively seeking partnerships, the developer is positioning itself as an independent studio with an established portfolio and a recognizable creative identity.

The next challenge will be finding the right partners to support future projects while maintaining the distinctive approach that has defined games like Contrast, We Happy Few, and South of Midnight.
