Higher Prices Reflect Mounting Pressure on Console Manufacturing

The Xbox price increase has been officially confirmed for Series S and Series X consoles across the UK and Europe, with prices rising by £130 to £170 in the UK and €150 to €200 across European markets.

The announcement follows the global Xbox price adjustments introduced in June and comes at a time when Microsoft is facing rising manufacturing costs, declining hardware sales, and a broader restructuring of its gaming business.

Xbox Price Increase Hits Every Current Console

The updated pricing affects every current Xbox console sold in the region, while the 2TB Xbox Series X model has been discontinued.

United Kingdom

  • Xbox Series S 512GB: £299.99 → £429.99
  • Xbox Series S 1TB: £349.99 → £519.99
  • Xbox Series X Digital 1TB: £449.99 → £619.99
  • Xbox Series X Disc 1TB: £499.99 → £669.99

Europe

  • Xbox Series S 512GB: €349.99 → €499.99
  • Xbox Series S 1TB: €399.99 → €599.99
  • Xbox Series X Digital 1TB: €549.99 → €749.99
  • Xbox Series X Disc 1TB: €599.99 → €799.99

The increases represent one of the largest mid-generation price adjustments ever seen for Xbox hardware.

Microsoft Blames Rising Component Costs

According to Microsoft, the decision is primarily driven by escalating hardware production costs.

The company explained that storage and memory prices have risen by more than 2.5 times in recent years, with another significant increase expected before the end of 2027.

Microsoft also reiterated that consoles remain a low-margin business. Unlike smartphones or laptops, gaming consoles are often sold at or below manufacturing cost, with profitability relying on software sales, subscriptions, and digital purchases throughout the console’s lifespan.

Hardware Sales Continue to Decline

Despite the challenging financial situation, Microsoft maintains that the current restructuring is designed to strengthen Xbox over the coming years.

Asha Sharma said the company intends to focus investments on the experiences players value most rather than relying on past successes. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella echoed that message, describing the ongoing changes as necessary steps to position Xbox for sustainable growth.

The company continues to target a return to business growth by the end of fiscal year 2027, although higher console prices may make that objective more challenging in an increasingly competitive hardware market.

What This Means for Xbox Players

The latest Xbox price increases comes as Microsoft faces a sharp rise in the cost of key components used in console manufacturing. Rising component costs, weaker hardware sales, and Microsoft’s wider restructuring strategy are reshaping how the company approaches its gaming business.

For consumers, the changes mean that entering the Xbox ecosystem is becoming significantly more expensive. At the same time, Microsoft is betting that a stronger focus on software, services, and long-term investment will help restore growth despite a more challenging hardware market.
